Pop-Up Stores Put Spotlight on India’s Up and Coming Fashion Designers
In the arts, being talented doesn’t guarantee success; without some form of marketing, the most brilliant of fashions, books, or paintings will end up in a drawer or closet gathering dust unless the public gets the chance to see them. Fashion shows are the most common way for fashion designers to show off their wares, and in these cases the invited audience usually filled with the rich and famous—virtually guaranteeing that the fashions presented will become well-known.
But one marketer in Bangalore, India, is bringing fashion to the people through a venture called Spoilt, which encourages designers from all across the country to exhibit their latest fashions in a variety of unexpected venues called pop-up stores. In late November, for example, the locale was an Italian restaurant and pub called Spiga in Bangalore, which showcased garments, purses, jewelry, shoes, and menswear brought by designers from Delhi, Bombay, Kolkata (Calcutta), and Bangalore.
Spoilt co-founder Anshu Juneja explains that a pop-up store brings the best designer goods to places consumers least expect it. “We usually keep our stores at malls or restaurants. People here carry their alcohol and browse…we are bringing the shops to them.”
One of the participating designers, Diksha is enthusiastic about the marketing concept, believing it is good for consumers and an excellent way for young, up and coming designers to showcase their talents by bringing in a sample of styles. Customers who place order will have the design custom made for them.
In addition to styles inspired by Indian culture, American and western European influenced fashions are also presented. According to designer Seema Boyd, interest level in the pop-up store idea was high, and a significant number of younger consumers were just as interested in more traditional Indian styles as they were in western designs.
That observation is indicative of the growing Indian fashion industry in places like Bangalore and Kolkata. The very first fashion week in India occurred in 2000. Since then, the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) has worked to put the country on the haute couture map. Now, New Delhi hosts two fashion weeks, one each in the spring and fall. The autumn 2001 event featured more than 175 designers. There are also regional events in Kolkata and Bangalore, making India one of the fashion industry’s more vibrant markets.

Max Azria
Not every successful fashion designer is a household name. But although they may not be well known by the general public, they can still influence trends and styles, especially regionally. In an industry always on the lookout for the next break-out designer, Max Azria has proven his success through longevity.
Azria was born in Sfax, Tunisia in 1948, when the country was still a French colony. When he was twelve, his family relocated to Paris, where his father worked in the olive oil industry. Azria found school boring and a waste of time and eventually dropped out when he was 15.
His first creative outlet was acting but he gravitated to fashion when he was around sixteen years old. But his path to designing was circuitous and he says he learned the business by following his own path and making his own rules. For a while he sold accessories to Parisian clothing boutiques. Then he imported clothes from Hong Kong to sell locally.
Eventually, Azria established his own line, manufacturing the designer clothes in-house. In the 1970s, he designed a line of denim jeans, using fabric from America. When they were completed he sold the jeans to retailers back in the United States, marketing them as French designer jeans. They were a hit.
Azria says he always knew he would one day move to America, even giving his children Anglicized names. He chose Los Angeles, he says, because the West Coast light reminded him of his native country. When Azria moved to California in 1983, he says he was emotionally and physically exhausted from having been a designer and manufacturer for 14 years.
“I wanted a more relaxed lifestyle,” he told the Los Angeles Times, “and a job that would let me stay in one place. I made the decision to become a retailer.”
Within a short time of moving to America, Azria launched the Jess boutique, which sold French imports. In 1989 he presented his first collection under the BCBG label, the acronym standing for bon chic, bon genre, which translates to good style, good attitude. His chic, hip designs quickly caught the attention of Hollywood celebrities. He later added an extensive line of accessories that now includes perfumes and cosmetics.
Azria was named California Designer of the Year in 1995 and Atlanta Designer of the Year the following season. In 1997, Azria received the Fashion Performance Award, which recognizes a designer’s influence on the industry as a whole. He was also honored by the City of Hope with its Spirit of Life Award to recognize his fundraising efforts for the organization. In 1998, Divine Design named Azria its women’s Designer of the Year and that same year Azria became a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
In 1999, Azria expanded his fashion empire by purchasing the Paris house of Herve Leger. Now headquartered in Beverly Hills, BCBG has dozens of boutiques in the United States, Asia, and Paris. The line has diversified to include BCBGirls, BGBG Attitude, and Max Rave, proving that Azria continues to conquer the design world with his unique sense of style.
